When is National Chili Month? October - National Chili Day is February 25.
How is this holiday celebrated?
It's celebrated by enjoying the many ways to eat chili all through the month of October. A great way to enjoy this holiday is by having a chili eating party.
Food Ideas for your Chili Party:
Sandwiches: If your planning a lunch or buffee, then think about serving sandwiches to go along with the chili. It seems that the favorite sandwiches to eat with chili is: grill cheese, bean & cheese boretoes, peanut butter and honey
- Favorite Chili Toppings: Chili is usually topped with everything from grated cheese, melted cheese, sour cream, diced onions, corn, chunky salsa, diced green onions, chives, corn chips to crushed crackers. Chili is even eaten with good ole southern cornbread crumbled up in it too. In the U.S. and Europe, bacon is often used as a topping on foods like chili.
- Favorite Side: Cheese Fries!
- Chili As A Dip: Here's a great idea for a chili dip party or even left over chili. Just blend your chili up until you can't tell it's chili anymore and serve it with corn chips or toasted pita pockets that's been cut into triangles- great as a dip. Make it creamy by adding a bit of butter and cream cheese.
- Chili at Halloween: Ohhhhh yessssss! You bet cha! Chili is a favorite meal on Halloween and as we all know, Halloween is in the month of October. Why is it a favorite at Halloween you ask? Well for those families who celebrate Halloween we tend to serve food that is stewish, brewish and bubbley and chili is just that. You know... it makes an easy bewitching dark meal in a cauldron and not only is it a warm meal on a cold Halloween night for our little goblins but chili is a favorite for most everyone.
- Chili Dogs: Do you want to know other food ideas for Halloween? All children love hot dogs so why not serve Halloween Chili Dogs. Try roasting those pumpkin seeds and sprinkle them on top of the chili dogs. It's spooktactular! (seeHalloweenRecipes)
Origin of this Holiday
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. We did however find that this holiday has been celebrated for many years and seems to of started in the United States. This holiday is referred to as a "National " day as all food holidays are. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. Even though we didn't, this is still a holiday that is publicized to celebrate. So have fun with it and celebrate it!
We found recognition about this holiday from:

Chili Chili Chili!
It doesn't matter if it's hot and spicy chili, turkey chili, beef chili, bean chili, beanless chili, white chili, red chili, green chili, vegetarian chili, meatless chili or 15 bean chili, chili is hellishly warming to the soul and a true favorite meal during cold winter months. I don't have to even say it but chili recipes are a dime a dozen and no one stews is the same.
It seems when the weather turns off cold.... that's when the chili pots are dusted off and pulled out of the back of our kitchen cabinets. Not often do we eat chili during the hot summer months except for on our hot dogs. Nope, not many of us will shy away from a good chili dog- but you can bet that when winter hits, we make up for not eating chili in the summer by eating it several times during the winter. It's a true favorite! When we see the snow start to fall, the chili pot starts to simmering. (October is also National Vegetarian Month & vegetarian chili is a popular too)
October is also National Sun Dried Tomato Month
October has been picked for National Chili Month in the United States. Did you know that October is also National Sun Dried Tomato month as well? Yep it is. There are those people who say you shouldn't put tomatoes in chili just like you find those who say you shouldn't put beans in your chili either, but I say try sun dried tomatoes in your chili this month. It's delicious!
Fire-fighters and Chili
Interesting enough, firefighters and chili just seem to go together. Each and every year you hear of more and more Firehouse Cook-offs that are competing over the best Firehouse Chili between fire-stations. Most all of these cook-offs are put on to build funds for the fire station or for a local cause that they are supporting for the year. Support your local firemen and be a part of these great cook-off contests. There a lot of fun and you will eat some of the best chili you have ever put in your mouth!
