The Belief: Moon magic is the belief that working rituals at the time of different phases of the moon can bring about physical or psychological change or transformation. These rituals have historically occurred on or around the full moon and to a lesser extent the new moon. Such practices are common amongst adherents of pagan, wiccan and witchcraft systems. Witches in Greek and Roman literature, particularly those from Thessaly, were regularly accused of "drawing down the moon" by use of a magic spell. The trick serves to demonstrate their powers, to perform a love spell or to extract a magical juice from the moon. Esbats: In wiccan groups, such lunar rituals during the full moon are called esbats. There are 13 esbats in total on the wiccan calendar. It is also believed that no magic should be performed during new moons.

13 Full Moons: There are thirteen canonical full moons each year, although some years will have only twelve, because a synodic lunar month is more than twenty-eight days long (actually about 29½ days). A "blue moon" is popularly defined as the second full moon in a calendar month, although some define it as the second full moon while the sun is in one sign of the Zodiac.

Does the Moon affect us? A bigggg YES! The Moon actually does have a powerful effect on many things. Here's a few to think about. 1.The shifting gravity created by the orbit of the Moon around the Earth is the primary cause of ocean tides. 2. We read all the time about the claim that the fertility cycle of a woman is also governed by the Moon. It may be coincidental, but the average female cycle takes 29 days, the same amount of time it takes for the Moon to rotate once on it's axis and to complete one orbit around the Earth. 3.There is a lot circumstantial evidence that says the lunar cycles have subtle effects on the phyche. We find many articles that explain how criminals and lunatics tend to become more erratic in their behavior around the time of the full moon. To add to that you hear jokes all the time ....."Oh no its a full moon..... I guess its going to be one crazy night tonight." That saying has been said for years because it has been a belief for many years of how a full moon effects us.

New Moon: The few days when the Moon is not visible in the clear sky. It represents the force of death and decay. Activities and magic related to cleansing and destruction are appropriate for this time.

Full Moon: The point of maximum psychic energy occurs When the full face of the Moon is visible in the clear sky. Many people perform sacred rites and rituals during this time.

Waxing Moon (increasing): First and second quarter are the phases during which the visible portion of the Moon is increasing towards full. This represents a gradual ramping up of the psychic energy bathing the Earth. It is suggested that new endeavors are best started during this time. The lunar increase is supposed to help carry the project forward.

Waning Moon (decreasing): Third and fourth quarter are the phases during which the visible portion of the moon is decreasing towards the new Moon. This indicates a gradual reduction of psychic energy that we are receiving from the Moon. The ending of projects can be accomplished faster and more smoothly by being aligned with this natural decrease in energy. This is also a time of introspection and meditation.
