Here are just a few ways you can take time to celebrate Halloween, family-style:
1. Family pumpkin carving/decorating contest -
A few perfectly round pumpkins and a lot of imagination can turn any old Saturday before Halloween into a fun family event! If your kids are older, a family pumpkin carving contest is a fantastic way to welcome in Halloween. If you have smaller kids, you may want to change the rules of the game to something more kid-friendly by having a decorating contest instead of a carving contest. Think about using colorful markers and sticking everything from sticks and leaves to candy and gumballs onto the pumpkins to make crazy characters that are sure to delight the trick-or-treaters that come calling on Halloween night!
We like taking the idea of a family pumpkin carving contest one step further by starting the day at the pumpkin patch, where picking the perfect pumpkin for the carving contest is the name of the game! A relaxing hay ride to the top of a pumpkin-filled patch is a fantastic way to get everyone in the family in the Halloween and autumn mood!
When it comes time to choosing the winners, consider making everyone in the family a winner by giving ribbons to the scariest pumpkin, the cutest pumpkin and the goofiest pumpkin!
2. Family hay ride -
A beautiful autumn hayride is, perhaps, one of the best ways to celebrate Halloween! A quick Internet search may be a good place to start for finding local farms that have fall hayrides. There are many hayrides that allow you to jump off and picnic, as well as some that provides pumpkin picking activities and other family activities. In addition, if you find a farm that offers hayrides, chances are there are also other fun activities for the family there, as well. Consider stopping off at a local farmers market and stocking up on apples and wonderful apple treats like apple butter and fresh applesauce, and end your family hayride with a wonderful picnic in the clean, crisp fall air!
3. Family Day in the Kitchen -
So, you've taken our suggestion and headed to your local farmer's market for the harvest foods that are so good this time of the year. Now it's time to take those harvest pickings home and make them into delicious treats that will delight every member of the family. An afternoon together making wonderful autumn-inspired treats is a wonderful way to get the family together, so roll up your sleeves and get cooking!
A wonderful addition to any autumn feast is candy- or caramel-coated apples. Get crisp autumn apples, insert popsicle sticks into the ends of the apples, melt caramel or candy over a slow flame or double boiler and dip the apples into it. After dipping, place the apples on a wax paper-coated baking pan and place the apples into the refrigerator to allow the caramel or candy to set. Consider peeling, cooking and mashing apples to make homemade applesauce, and can it so you enjoy the fresh apple taste all winter long!
4. Decorating the yard -
If the fall weather is cooperating, bring the family outdoors for an afternoon of yard decorating! If you enjoy decorating your home with an autumn theme, surround your home with pumpkins, colorful and interesting gourds and bales of hay. Complete the look by making your own homemade family scarecrow, complete with Dad's old work clothes! If you love everything Halloween, turn your front yard into a creep show, complete with spider webs across the hedges, tomb stones with funny sayings in the lawn, and skeletons hanging precariously from the tree limbs! Go one step further and consider adding spooky lighting to scare your neighbors during the nighttime hours!
5. Haunted Garage / Basement -
Nothing brings a family closer than fear! That's right - it is time to gather up the family troops, round up some household materials, such as dark colored blankets, scary music, ketchup and knife, and deck out your garage or basement in a ghoulish way. Creating a haunted house in your garage can be fun for the entire neighborhood, and what a great way to show off your new Halloween costumes to the masses. Or, if you are planning to throw a monster mash bash, and if your home has a basement, think of it this way: everyone is already under ground and you just need to add tombstones.
Thank you!
