Definition of a Dinner Party
"A dinner party is a formal social gathering at which people eat dinner together, usually in the host's own home. At the least formal dinner parties, a buffet of food is provided on a table or counter, and the guests choose items from the buffet and eat standing up as they talk and mingle. At the most formal dinner parties, dinner is served at a dining table with place settings. Dinner parties are sometimes preceded by a cocktail party, a social gathering in a living room or bar where guests drink alcoholic cocktails as they mingle. Female guests may wear cocktail dresses. Men often wear cocktail blazers/jackets. Cocktail parties are often held as a prelude to a dinner party."
The United States and Canada have experienced a recent Renaissance of the dinner party, most notably amongst college-educated urbanites in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties. While the spike in popularity of the dinner party has been witnessed in nearly all major cities, the Chicago Dinner Party Scene is arguably the strongest in the US. Many dinner party enthusiasts assert that the post-2000 North American dinner party trend had its genesis in that city. wikipedia / documentation_license

Dinner Party Tips
- Dinner parties are formal or semi-formal but you can have a casual dinner party as well. When inviting your guest, make sure you let them know if it's casual or not- otherwise they may show up in cocktail dresses which is the traditional attire.
- Dinner Parties always have a nice centerpiece on the table. It can be fresh flowers or a beautiful candle arrangement. Be sure you don't make the centerpiece to tall. You want your guest to be able to see each other across the table with no trouble.
- Round or square table? It really doesn't matter but some sources suggest that a round table implies that everyone is equally important and it's easier to talk with guests at a round table.
- Table Setting: No plastic forks or knives and no paper napkins! Dinner parties use real silverware on the table and cloth napkins. For an extra touch it's even nice to have hot finger bowls for each setting but not required. See photo of a formal setting and more information.
